What can I use instead of fabric softener?
Three things fit: wool dryer balls, plant-based dryer sheets and softener pods. Wool balls are reusable and add no scent.1 Dryer sheets are thrown out after each load.3 Pods go in the washer and use a mineral softener.7
Wool balls are the cheapest by far, because one set covers many loads. A pod costs the most per load of the three.
Do wool dryer balls work?
The seller says they separate clothes so hot air moves better, which cuts drying time by up to 25% and lowers static and wrinkles.1 That is the seller's claim. We read listings and labels and did not run a test.
The wool balls' listings name no scent. If you want a smell on your clothes, pick a sheet or pod.
Can I use vinegar as a fabric softener?
Some laundry makers suggest white vinegar. Molly's Suds says a half cup of vinegar balances hard water and calls it a natural fabric softener.8
Washer makers are more careful. Whirlpool and Maytag both publish articles saying vinegar can wear rubber seals and hoses over time.9, 10 Check your washer's manual before you put vinegar in the drum.
Which swaps have no added scent?
The wool balls' listings name no scent.1, 4 The Clean People dryer sheets list fragrance, which their listing says is essential oils.2, 3 The Dropps pods list fragrance components.5
