Laundry detergent sheets without PVA
If you want no PVA, buy Molly's Suds Original powder, unscented: its label lists none.1 Only one sheet, PV2, says it is PVA-free, and that is the seller's claim with no maker ingredient list. The six other sheet brands we could read all list PVA.2

Two suspects. One pick.

Molly's Suds Original Laundry Powder, Unscented, 240 loads
Our pickBest if you want no PVA (a powder, not a sheet). Four ingredients, no PVA and no fragrance on the maker's list. Molly's own sheets list PVOH, which is the same material.1

The Clean People Fragrance Free Laundry Detergent Sheets, 32 sheets
Best sheet if PVA is fine with you. The Clean People say PVA is in their sheets. The list has no fragrance, dye or brightener, but the product page names one ethoxylated ingredient and potassium sorbate.3
Every sheet we read for PVA
The table shows what each maker lists, with the Safer Choice list next to it. PVA shows up in the ingredient list even when the front of the box says plastic free or eco.

Do all laundry sheets have PVA?
Every sheet we could read lists it. That is six brands: The Clean People,3 Earth Breeze,5 Tru Earth,6 ECOS,7 Seventh Generation8 and Arm & Hammer.9
The Clean People put it plainly on their own page: "you won't find laundry sheets without PVA on your store's shelves."2 They describe PVA as a water-soluble polymer that carries the detergent until it hits water.11
Which laundry sheet says it has no PVA?
The seller says PV2 uses seaweed-derived alginate instead of PVA, with no PVA film left in your wash.4 That is the only PVA-free claim we found on a sheet in the Amazon results.
We could not confirm it. We found no maker site or ingredient list, only the seller's listing, and the listing has no star rating yet.4 If you try it, read the box.
What should I buy if I want to avoid PVA?
Buy a powder or a liquid. Molly's Suds Original Laundry Powder lists four ingredients and no PVA.1, 12 Molly's own sheets list PVOH, so the sheet form brings the film back.13
If you want sheets and PVA is fine with you, The Clean People Fragrance Free sheets list no fragrance, dye or brightener. The product page does name one ethoxylated ingredient, glycereth-6 cocoate.3, 14
How else do laundry sheets differ?
Five of the six PVA brands also list an ethoxylated ingredient: Earth Breeze,5 Tru Earth,6 Seventh Generation,8 Arm & Hammer9 and The Clean People.3 ECOS lists none.7
ECOS's sheet list includes phenoxyethanol as a preservative, and Seventh Generation's does too.7, 8
Are any laundry sheets EPA Safer Choice?
Yes. The EPA list includes the Seventh Generation and ECOS Free & Clear sheets.15 Both list PVA on the maker's page.7, 8 The listing and the PVA are two separate questions.
Questions people ask
Do The Clean People laundry sheets contain PVA?
Yes. The maker says PVA is in its sheets and that you won't find sheets without it on store shelves.2
Do Earth Breeze sheets contain PVA?
Yes. The maker's ingredient page lists polyvinyl alcohol as the structuring agent that holds the cleaning ingredients until they dissolve in water.5
What is PVA in a laundry sheet?
Polyvinyl alcohol is a water-soluble synthetic polymer. The Clean People say it is an important ingredient in detergent sheets because it carries concentrated detergent.11
Is there a PVA-free sheet I can trust?
We could not confirm one. The seller says PV2 is PVA-free, but the claim is only on its listing.4 A powder or liquid, like Molly's Suds powder, has no PVA on its list.1

The paper trail
Every product on this page was looked up in the EPA Safer Choice list, CPSC recalls, California Prop 65 notices and EWG’s database. We read each maker’s full ingredient label and worked out what a load or an ounce really costs. Every flag links to where it came from. How we snoop.
