Our pickCheapest per load in a high-efficiency washer. The maker's high-efficiency dose is 1 oz, which is where the 200-load count comes from, and EPA Safer Choice lists this detergent.3
Watch for: Standard washers use 2 oz a load, so the same pack covers 100 loads. The label also lists methylisothiazolinone, a preservative some people avoid.
Molly's Suds Original Laundry Powder, Unscented, 240 loads
Best for standard washers or a short ingredient list. One tablespoon covers a load in any washer, and the label lists four ingredients with no preservative.4
Earth Breeze Laundry sheets, Fresh Scent, 180 loads
Cheapest sheets that are easy to find. The 180-load count assumes half a sheet for a regular load; a full sheet for a large load halves it to 90.5

How do you count the cost of one load?
We take the maker's dose for a normal load and divide the pack by it. We do not use the number in the Amazon title. For ECOS that dose is 1 oz in a high-efficiency washer and 2 oz in a standard one.1 Molly's Suds uses one tablespoon either way.10
Sheets are counted the way each maker counts them. Earth Breeze calls a half sheet a regular load and a full sheet a large load.5 Clean People uses one strip, which is half a sheet, for a medium load.11
Why is ECOS the cheapest pick?
EPA Safer Choice lists ECOS Free & Clear, and the maker's page says it has no added dyes or fragrances.3 At the 1 oz high-efficiency dose, one pack stretches to 200 loads.
The label lists methylisothiazolinone as a preservative.12 If you want a detergent with no preservative on its list, Molly's Suds powder is the cheapest one here.4
What if I have a standard washer?
Then ECOS uses 2 oz a load and the pack covers 100 loads, not 200.1 That puts ECOS above Molly's Suds, which keeps one tablespoon a load in every washer.10 Pick Molly's Suds if your washer is a standard top loader.
Are laundry sheets cheaper than liquid?
Not on this list. Earth Breeze sheets cost more per load than Molly's Suds at half a sheet a load, and more again at a full sheet.5 Clean People's fragrance free sheets cost more per load than any pick here.6 Sheets win on weight and travel, not on price.
